Dental Crowns Offer Sturdy Protection For Damaged Teeth

A dental crown is a cap that covers a damaged tooth completely above your gum line. When decay or physical trauma removes a significant amount of your tooth’s healthy structure, a filling may not restore your tooth’s original strength. To take the full pressure of your bite and restore its alignment, we can fashion a dental crown that takes the original shape of your healthy tooth. Caps are also used in combination with dental implants to restore missing teeth and at the end of root canal therapy after removing infections.

While mainly a restorative therapy, Dr. Hopkins also sometimes recommend dental crowns for cosmetic purposes when teeth are misshapen, severely discolored, or when designing smile makeovers.

What Are The Benefits Of A Dental Crown?

Your dental cap provides valuable functional and cosmetic benefits while preserving the healthy structure of your tooth below. A crown can cover exposed nerves when a damaged tooth becomes severely injured, relieving your pain. By returning your bite’s alignment, your crown takes the pressure off nearby teeth to prevent accelerated wear and tear. Because teeth with lost enamel are more prone to developing cavities, dental crowns help stop and prevent tooth decay.

Designing Your Custom Dental Crown

At Advanced Dental Center, we select from a variety of materials to help meet your goals and budget. For less visible teeth at the back of your mouth, we may choose metal or porcelain fused to metal to withstand greater bite force. For more visible anterior teeth, we may select a traditional porcelain or zirconia material that best mimics your tooth’s shape, size, and color.

Before placing your crown, we will prepare the tooth by shaping its sides and surfaces so that the restoration comfortably fits. We then take an impression to send to a local lab that will fabricate your new cap. At a follow-up appointment, we will perform any necessary adjustments, and then bond the restoration to your tooth using a strong adhesive.
