Routine Cleanings Help You Fight Tooth Decay And Gum Disease

Adopting a preventive approach to oral care helps you preserve a vibrant, healthy smile. While consistent oral hygiene forms the basis for preventing tooth decay and gum disease, regular dental checkups allow us to be involved in your dental health and care. When you attend a cleaning and examination, we will remove any bacterial deposits that you cannot handle on your own and identify any damage that requires further treatment. This helps prevent any active oral threat from becoming more severe and requiring a more involved procedure.

How Often Should I Visit The Dentist?

We recommend scheduling a cleaning and examination at least once every six months. Semiannual visits provide the opportunity to discover the most active concerns before they become more serious. By identifying problems early on, we can often provide a more conservative treatment that preserves more of your healthy tissues. For patients with more complex dental issues, we may suggest visiting more frequently. For example, periodontal maintenance may require up to three or four visits per year to help control gum disease.

What To Expect During Your Appointment

Your appointment begins with a professional cleaning to remove all plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth. Our hygienist will take special care to help you preserve your enamel from bacterial threats and provide a brighter smile. Receiving a cleaning every six months complements your daily brushing and flossing. We will let you know if we discover areas of your smile that could use additional attention at home.

Following your cleaning, we will examine your teeth and gums to look for existing signs of disease and decay. Collecting digital X-rays helps create a dental record to quickly identify any sudden changes in your oral cavity at subsequent checkups. If we discover a minor cavity, we will suggest treatment at this time, or schedule follow-up appointments for more involved restorative procedures.
