Restore Form and Function with a Dental Crown

A tooth that has been damaged by decay or trauma can be salvaged with a beautiful, natural-looking dental crown. At the Advanced Dental Center in Plano, TX, Dr. Christine Hopkins offers highly cosmetic crowns to restore both the aesthetics and function of your smile. Our crowns are fabricated from the highest-grade materials, including porcelain-fused-to-metal, all zirconia, and zirconia-fused porcelain.

What is a Dental Crown?

Also known as caps, crowns are a type of restoration that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth. A crown can restore the size, shape, and strength of your tooth, as well as enhance its appearance and protect it from potential damage. Dr. Hopkins will likely recommend a crown to:

  • Reinforce a broken, fractured, or decayed tooth
  • Secure a dental bridge
  • Protect and restore a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Replace a failed filling or other restoration

While mainly a restorative treatment, crowns are sometimes recommended for cosmetic corrections if the tooth is misshapen or severely discolored. Dr. Hopkins can also use a crown to restore a missing tooth as part of a dental implant treatment

A crown is fitted on top of a reshaped tooth.
Crowns both restore damaged teeth and protect them from future damage.

What are the Benefits?

Dental crowns offer substantial aesthetic and functional benefits. These restorations can alleviate dental pain and discomfort, improve your ability to chew and speak, and help realign your bite. Additionally, it can provide the support necessary to take the pressure off other teeth and decrease wear on chewing surfaces.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

During your initial consultation, Dr. Hopkins will perform a comprehensive examination of your oral health. She may recommend treatment for any underlying issues that could compromise the integrity of your restoration, such as deep decay or periodontal disease.

We use our chairside color matching system to ensure that your crown blends seamlessly into your smile.

Before placing the crown, Dr. Hopkins will prepare your tooth by gently shaping the sides and chewing surface so your restoration fits comfortably in your smile. Next, we will take an impression and send it to a trusted local lab for fabrication, which typically takes about two weeks.

When your crown arrives in the office, we can use our chairside color matching system to ensure your crown blends seamlessly into your smile. If no major adjustments are necessary, Dr. Hopkins can bond the new restoration to your tooth using a strong adhesive at the same appointment. After placing the crown, she will take clinical x-rays to ensure a precise fit.

"I have been going to Dr. Hopkins for years now. I was looking for a general dentist but also a doctor that also had a prosthodontist background so any major work that I would require in the future could be done by the doctor who has regularly worked on me. Dr Hopkins has met and even exceeded my expectations in oral care."
